BOL PROCESSOR BP2 -- release (2.9.3) -- January 1999
BP2 is a MacOS software for music design working in MIDI, QuickTime MIDI and Csound environments. New versions are available on the Bol Processor web site <http://perso.wanadoo.fr/bel/music/index.html> and (after a small delay) Info-Mac mirror sites, for instance <ftp://ftp.amug.org/pub/mirrors/info-mac/gst/midi/>.
The package is made of two files in BinHex 4 format:
o "bol-processor-appl.hqx" contains the program (both 68K and ppc versions), examples and information about new features.
o "bol-processor-doc.hqx" contains the complete documentation in MS-Word and HTML formats.
Use Compact Pro or StuffIt Expander to convert from BinHex. Converting "bol-processor-appl.hqx" yields a folder containing the present document and a VISE installer named "Install Bol Processor". Double-click it, select the destination and start the installation.
The VISE installer takes care of installing files according to the processor (68k or PowerPC). On PowerMacs it automatically drags a file "OMSLibPPC.slb" to the Extensions folder in the System. Nothing else is changed in the System folder.
The installer creates two folders, "bol-processor-application" and "bol-processor-data" in the directory selected for the installation. It is not recommended to make changes in the application folder, except trashing the "+sc.shutdown" script after running the program for the first time.
Basic information about the software and an introduction to recently implemented features are contained in the "READ THIS" folder of "bol-processor-application". Read the files with your favourite web browser, starting with "* READ THIS FIRST!".

To learn the basic operation of BP2 you need to download "bol-processor-doc.hqx" which contains "BP2 doc - MS Word" in MS-Word (5.1). The first part is a "QuickStart" manual that will guide your steps and make it easy to solve problems relating to communication with electronic music hardware. If you don't have MS-Word, use for instance ClarisWorks to open the file. Otherwise, drag the file to your word processor and let MacLink Plus take care of the conversion -- it's a Mac, isn't it?
The documentation is also available in hypertext, both in the "bol-processor-doc.hqx" package and on the Bol Processor web site.
When BP2 software, documentation and examples get upgraded, similar BinHex files will be found on Info-Mac and Bol Processor sites (see above URLs). You may check them from time to time and download upgrades.
Send us mail even if you don't wish to register so that we insert your address in the upgrade announcement list. Use the "contact.htm" form in the "READ THIS" folder.
The standard MIDI input/output of BP2 runs under Opcode OMS (Open Music System) which may be dowloaded from <ftp://ftp.opcode.com/pub/oms/mac/>. Version 2.3.2 or greater is recommended with MacOS 8.x. BP2 also has an in-built MIDI driver that can be used when OMS is inactive.
BP2 communicates with Csound, a public-domain software environment for the design and transformation of digitized sounds. The Csound front page is <http://www.leeds.ac.uk/music/Man/c_front.html> and gives indications about downloading.
A 50$ shareware with concession rates for unemployed or citizens of developing countries, BP2 may be freely distributed provided that no alteration has been made to the software, examples and documents. To register, first read instructions in the "Registration.txt" document, then double-click the "Register" utility in the "bol-processor-application" folder.
CD-ROM publishers should get in touch with the authors to make sure that they distribute the most recent version. Permission is granted, anyway, to include this software on all Info-Mac CD-ROMs.
DISCLAIMER: BP2 is checked for "old" Mac viruses with Disinfectant 3.7.1. It does not exchange binary executable files (macros, applets, etc.) with other software. However, there is no certification for this package to be free of "worms" or MacOS system viruses posterior to May 6, 1998, when John Norstad (Northwestern University) retired Disinfectant, although we do check the environment with commercial virus/worm packages as well.
